Frozen Drinks

Ronda L. Halpin

August brings some of the hottest weather of the summer to bear on Wisconsin. Sometimes, it's just not enough to grab a cool beer or a chilled glass of wine. We need something else to help us get our chill on. We need … popsicles.

Now these are not popsicles for the kids. Feel free to make other ones for them or get a box of whatever suits your fancy. These are the frozen treats for the adults. Packed with ripe strawberries and red wine, it's like pouring your favorite sangria into a popsicle mold. In fact, it's just like that! Simply put, blend your favs together and pour it into molds.

You could try making these with harder liquor but I wouldn't for two reasons: 1) they might not set up very well, and 2) these popsicles are easy to enjoy so having more than one is fine … when you're talking wine! That said, you could definitely try other wine/fruit combinations. I'm thinking a peach-white wine version might happen later this month, in fact. In the meantime, keep your cool and enjoy these grown up popsicles!

Sangria Popsicles

  • 1⁄2 bottle red wine (I used merlot)
  • 2 c. sliced strawberries
  • 1/3-1/2 c. sugar, depending on the sweetness of the berries
  • 1-2 T. balsamic vinegar, according to your preferences

Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and purée. Carefully pour the mixture into 12 popsicle molds. Place the sticks and freeze until solid, at least 4 hours or overnight.

  • Yields: 12 popsicles
  • Preparation Time: 4+ hours, mostly freezing time
